After 71 years…It’s Goodbye to Mercury!
The fun started way back in 1939. The NEW Mercury Division was created by Henry Ford Sr and Edsel Ford. It was a great idea to introduce an upscale Ford, but priced less than a Lincoln. The War years interupted production for 4and 1/2 years. But in 1946 Mercury started to become a household word. The Mercury of 1949 set the World on it’s ear. Radical but well accepted styling put it right in high demand with the public. And who would ever forget James Dean’s ride in one when he made “Rebel without a Cause”.
Unfortunately memories don’t make money. Ford neglected the Mercury Division for so many years, that there is no way to bring her back. But across town General Motors did the same thing to Pontiac and Saturn…so there’s plenty of blame to go around. Now Lincoln-Mercury dealers wonder what’s in store for them next. Very few will be able to survive on just selling Lincolns. It will take some time to sort out, but it will reconstitute next year after the final build date is over.
