Hybrids and EV Sales take off again in March!

The public really has no clear message about the price of gas that will force them to by smaller or smarter. But with the price of gas hovering between $4.00 and $5.00 …the Hybrid market and EV market, became very strong again in March. Sale were lead of course by Toyota’s Kin of the Hybrids…the Prius. Sales for Hybrids were 106,207 against only 7,250 for EV’s. But the entire segment is now very active and selling at a hot pace.
In January, this year, Bloomberg actually said that slow Hybrid sales are now bringing a dose of reality to auto manufacturers. Even articles in the Automotive News have suggested the same thing. But the public seems to be more engaged now…maybe the perception this time, is that gas prices may not fall back.

Acura’s RL gets NSX’s Hybrid Drivetrain

Tokyo gives the green light for the next generation of RL to go “Hybrid”. The new RL will arrive as early as this Fall. The RL will be SH-AWD . Meaning a Special Handling-All-wheel Drive platform. It will be exciting “New” technology for Honda/Acura.
Their is a current SH-AWD version of the RL, but it uses a transaxle to deliver power to all four wheels. The new Hybrid program will use two electric motors on each of the rear wheels to power the car.

Mazda Hopes to Score Big with Skyactive Technologies

Mazda is counting big on it’s new vision of “Skyactive” technologies. As Mazda attempts to re-make itself to a profitable future. Mazda says that manufacturing Skyactive vehicles is less expensive than standard engine and transmission models. It also helps Mazda meet the higher emissions standards that will take place in Japan, Europe and the USA.
In the USA a Mazda3 with the Skyactive technology commands $600 more than a standard equipped mazda3 engine and automatic transmission. But with Skyactive, you get 40 mpg on the highway as compared to 33 on a non-Skyactive car. In January this year, two-thirds of the Mazda3 customers choose Skyactive. With the price of gas going “Sky Active” too, it’s no wonder the new option is a hit. With the new Skyactive powertrian, Mazda hopes to take sales from about 800,000 units this year to a million units next year. Only time will tell.
